"THREE WOODCARVINGS" (ca. 1940) By LAWRENCE EDWARD ASHBROOK Aka "THE KENTUCKY WHITTLER" (b. 1890)
All three figures hand-carved. Nurse: 14 ¼ inches (height), Hitler: 6 ½ inches, Stalin: 6 ½ inches.
Ashbrook displayed his art during the 1930’s at his home museum. The museum was 14 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky on US 25 in the old toll house by the Clays Ferry Bridge. Also, he used a bus as a mobile museum and traveled throughout Kentucky and as far south as the Florida Everglades. Subjects of his carvings were animals, political and historical figures, celebrities, etc. Extremely creative American folk artist.
