"NEW YORK BROWNSTONES IN WINTER" (ca. 1915) By BERNHARD GUTMANN (American, 1869 - 1936)

An Ashcan School painting by an important American artist that exhibited at the seminal International Exhibition of Modern Art (The Armory Show), 1913, New York City. Oil on canvas, 18 x 14 inches (canvas), 25 x 21 inches (frame), signed lower right, 22k gold leaf hand-carved frame.

This specific painting by Gutmann is a copy of “Snow in New York”,” 1902, by Robert Henri, which is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art. Gutmann was active in New York City during the early years of the 20th century and was influenced by Henri who was a contemporary.

One would surmise that Gutmann saw Henri’s painting not long after it was completed, and maybe one of the viewings was at the Armory Show, 1913.
