"THE NEW JACK KNIFE" (ca. 1880) by WILLIAM GILBERT GAUL, N. A. (American, 1855 - 1919)

Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 inches (canvas), 31 x 27 inches (frame), signed lower right,  hand-carved gold leaf frame.

Stylistically, this painting is reminiscent of the very best examples of genre painting by the famous American artist John George Brown, with whom Gaul was studying when this painting, most likely, was rendered.  Also the treatment of the figures is very similar to works by Winslow Homer, a contemporary who significantly influenced Gaul.
