"CABIN IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS" (ca. 1920's) By STELLA HENDRICKS (American, 1879 - 1964)
Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 inches (canvas), 23 ½ x 27 ½ inches (original arts & crafts bronze frame), signed lower right. The exact location in the Smoky Mountains is currently unknown; however, further research may provide more specific information as to the location. This painting is reminiscent of renderings by Rudolph Ingerle (1879 “ 1950) who earned the appellation, "Painter of the Smokies.
(Stella Hendricks taught at Elon College in North Carolina during the 1920's. Ms. Hendricks, born in Indiana, lived most of her life as an art educator in Danville. She was a graduate of the John Herron Art Institute, Central Normal College, DePauw University and Columbia University.)
