"BRIDGE AT TWILIGHT" (ca. 1900, Paul's Bridge over the Neponset River, Hyde Park, Boston.) by JOHN JOSEPH ENNEKING (Amercian, 1841-1916)

Oil on board, 12 x 16 inches (board); 15 x 19 inches (period gold leaf frame)

The frame appears to have been made by the Newcomb-Macklin Company;signed lower right; verso: Old Vose Galleries label with artist’sname and the title of the painting.

The painting is one of the artist’s best tonalist renderings, with a wonderful and haunting contrast between dark and light.
