Southern Alkaline Glazed Jug
Late 19th or early 20th century
One gallon, 9 1⁄2 inches (height). Probably North Carolina.
Green alkaline glaze with blue rutile at the lower terminal of the handle. Rutile is a mineral composed primarily of titanium dioxide and produces crystalline, speckling, streaking, mottling effects on pottery. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, etc. There is a “turkey dropping” to the left of the handle where a kiln brick melted and dripped on the jug during the firing. A nice vintage piece of Southern pottery.
