American Candlebox with Sliding Lid
ca. 1820

4 inches (height), 5 3⁄4 inches (width), 12 inches (length).

Appears to be made of chestnut. Unusual spline joinery fastens end molding on sliding lid. Dovetailed box and original finish. Tiny pieces of remaining cloth, to soften impact and wear of closing lid, still attached where the end molding on lid bangs against the side when lid is pushed shut. Age appropriate wear, excellent condition. (Purchased out of an estate in Georgia.)
