School Girl's Theorem, ca. 1840 - 1860

Approximately 10 ½ x 8 ¼ inches (sight), 13 ½ x 11 ¼ inches (original cherry frame), hand-decoration on velvet.

The piece has the name “Mary E. Massey” inscribed in several places. Purchased years ago in Lewisburg, TN.

“Mary E. Massey was the only daughter born to Joesph H. Massey and Emily G. Carter. Her father was a farmer. Mary may have painted her theorem at the Lewisburg Female Academy, founded in 1838.
