"EARLY NORTHERN TLINGIT MODEL TOTEM POLE" (Dated 1899)
15 inches (height). Hand-carved cedar with some pigment.
Verso: “Juneau 1899”in 19th century black script. A very rare early Tlingit hand-carved model totem pole. The totem features unusual expressive imagery, a Raven stand perched on the top of the totem followed by two bear creatures with extended limbs. Note the sizing of the figures as they decrease in size from top to bottom, giving the totem a visual parody that adds substance and striking forms. Overall the totem is deeply carved and hollowed out with pierced imagery, the subtle use and traces of the original black pigments remain. The back is slightly hollowed out.
